One Hove Park. Hove. New visualisation

Yelo Architects is the exciting new Brighton architectural practice launched last year by local chartered architect, Andy Parsons. Located in the heart of Brighton, the practice has been commissioned to work on several high-profile local projects – including the long awaited transformation of the Brighton Dome ticket office. Yelo Architects was selected to work on the prestigious Brighton Dome job following a competitive process which they won despite stiff competition from none other than Sir Terence Conran and his team of architects!

Yelo Architects have recently embarked on their latest project, designing a unique and stunning development of around 70 new homes situated between two of Hove’s finest parks.

Just under half of the homes on the site will be affordable with a proportion of homes available to first time buyers on a shared ownership basis, which can start at as little as 25 percent with the balance made up of a rental fee – however there’s always the option to buy more shares until you own outright.

Working closely with Yelo Architects on this project is landscape architect and garden designer Nicholas Dexter. Nick’s garden design practice has been commissioned to produce a bold and dynamic landscape to complement and link the green park land setting of Hove Park and Hove Recreation Ground which surrounds the site. His concept is focussed on planting mature, forest-sized native trees which will be at least 3 storeys high when planted.

A key part of the vision includes a large, luxuriously planted communal garden complete with lush herb beds, raised edible planters and unique architecturally designed cages to form walls within the grounds. Each of the ground floor apartments features an individually designed, generously sized garden incorporating hydroponic green walls and bubbling stone water features.

The upper floor apartments all benefit from generously sized balcony spaces perfectly proportioned to accommodate at least two chairs and a table. Andy and Nick have designed galvanised steel planters built in to the balcony which will provide each occupier with space for planting – with a fantastic south facing façade, the planters provide the perfect opportunity to grow exotic fruits and vegetables.

In terms of the aesthetic, Yelo Architects is shunning the ubiquitous, stark white-rendered blockwork which has been so popular with many developers, and are instead proposing to build the scheme using bricks manufactured by a local supplier based in West Sussex. To lend prominence to each entrance there will be a symmetrical copse of elegant silver birches, like those in front of Tate Modern in London.

Unusually, the developer is proposing to provide one car parking space for each apartment in a sunken basement car park, with secure cycle storage also provided and a car club set up to help reduce car use and carbon emissions.

Yelo Architects have a deep concern for the environment – both built and natural – and Andy is committed to creating a high quality and sustainable design for the site which will stand the test of time. Andy is determined to produce as “green” and energy efficient a building as possible – starting with a super performance building fabric including ultra high levels of insulation, triple-glazed windows, low emission high efficiency gas boilers and low-carbon, locally sourced materials which Andy has specified to help significantly reduce the building’s impact on the environment.

A special solar power roof covering will harness sunlight to produce electricity – saving occupiers of the building thousands of pounds a year in energy costs! Overall, the building will achieve an Eco Rating of at least Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 – reducing carbon emissions by over 44% compared to a standard home built to the Building Regulations – a significant achievement!

Andy Parsons is clearly passionate about his work and together with his team at Yelo is dedicated to making all his projects successful. “I am committed to designing and creating buildings and places which enrich the lives of the people who use them. I am personally committed to providing the highest quality building on the Park House site, something that will truly stand the test of time and responds positively to the character of Hove Park and the surrounding area”.

“Yelo is an exciting architectural practice that brings a natural design flair and assurance to every project no matter the size. Whether delivering a large scale residential development for a large housebuilder or a beautifully crafted kitchen for a homeowner, the practice consistently delivers quality. We love working with clients to help you achieve the home that you really desire. We’ve worked on our own homes for years and will understand your requirements implicitly.”
