Falmer Garden

This garden is located up on the Sussex Downs in Falmer – a stones throw from the new football stadium (which looks quite imposing, considering they promised to lower the stadium so that it could “blend” into the landscape!).

The garden design stage has now been completed and the project is well underway. In fact the garden is a boggy mess after 2 weeks of heavy rain!

The client and I established that the front garden should be formalised so that visitors were always greeted by a smart and ordered garden layout. The planting in the front will be fairly contemporary and evergreen. Groups of buxus semperviren spheres will be clustered together to a create mounded carpet.

At the rear of the property the space will be treated in a far more natural way. We have designed a square pond – with natural margins 3.0M x 3.0M. This should attract a lot of insect and wildlife. We’ve also allocated a space for growing herbs and vegetables and created a gravel path allowing a bit of circulation through the informal planting.

This is not a overly large garden so it will be interesting to see how the large (ish) pond will sit in the garden once it is built. I always believe that bigger is better, when it comes to water features!
